Marcola, Oregon Milestone Family Picnic in a Field

There’s something magical about seeing a family grow, especially when you get to capture it from the very beginning. One year ago, I had the pleasure of photographing a glowing couple during their maternity session on a ranch in the PNW forest, nestled between Eugene and Sweet Home, Oregon. Now, one year later, I found myself standing in the same spot, but this time, roles were reversed—last year, they were the ones expecting, and now, I’m the one with a baby bump! This amazing couple has always been so giving and open and that hasn't changed a bit! I was gifted a some of the cutest clothes and essentials they use the most and I couldn't have been more grateful for it.

This sweet family returned with their adorable new addition—a beautiful baby girl who is as bright-eyed and curious as her parents—and, of course, their lovable golden retriever who’s grown into a full-blown bundle of energy. It was an honor to photograph their journey again, and the session felt like coming full circle in the most beautiful way.

Embracing the Chaos: A Puppy and a Baby

The family wanted to recreate the intimate picnic we set up last year, which was such a memorable part of their maternity shoot. Of course, they brought along their now one-year-old golden retriever who, just like before, added an extra dose of joyful chaos to the day. Thankfully we LIVE for the chaos so literally no stress there.

This dog is full of life—darting around the forest, playfully tugging at the baby’s blanket, and attempting to sneak a nibble from the picnic basket whenever he got the chance. As a photographer (and now, as an expectant mother), I’ve learned that the best moments often come from embracing the unexpected. The puppy’s antics added so much character to the photos—capturing the fun and slightly chaotic reality of life with a new baby and a young dog.

A Picture-Perfect Setting

This year, we were blessed with the most stunning wildflowers in full bloom, which was different from last year’s tall wild grass. The vibrant colors of the flowers created a gorgeous, natural backdrop for the photos, adding a sense of continuity but with a fresh, new twist. It’s incredible how much the landscape can change in just a year, yet it still felt just as enchanting and perfect for their family photoshoot.

To add a special touch, my kind neighbor gifted me the most beautiful florals from her garden; lilies, gladiolas, sunflowers and some green fillers. These flowers were the perfect addition to our picnic setup, filling a wicker basket that became the centerpiece of the picnic scene. The baby was particularly fascinated by the bright blooms, reaching out to touch them with chubby little fingers—a moment I was thrilled to capture.

Reversing Roles and New Beginnings

What made this session extra special was the unexpected role reversal. Last year, it was the couple who was excitedly anticipating the arrival of their little one. This time, I was the one with a baby on the way, and they were now seasoned parents, sharing their experiences and laughter with me between shots. It felt like such a beautiful, full-circle moment, reminding me of how life continuously evolves and surprises us in the best ways.

There was a shared understanding and connection between us, having both been on different sides of the maternity journey. As we walked through the forest, capturing sweet moments between the couple, their baby, and their ever-energetic golden retriever, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the unique bond that photography creates between people.
